Warloch rest area > Mataranka > Thermal pool (45km, 2h10)

Yes, it did rain last night but not as heavy as I was afroad of. And today, the good weather is coming back, good! For the first time in Australia I had the chance to taste a natural thermal pool and I must say, it’s very VERY nice :-) Not even crowded, like ten people at a time and all stayed together when the other half was empty most of the time. People were maybe scared of the rapids where I found that spot being the best. Very nice place!

Let’s come back in time, a the Warloch rest area. As I mentioned, it did rain last night but nothing to worried about. The problem now is that it’s bloddy hot at night and I find hard to sleep like this. The mosquitos are back as well so I can’t leave the tent open. Hard life though ;-) Well, I’ve packed everything and I ready to cycle these tiny 26km to get to Mataranka.

The weather is still covered but there is nothing to be worried about those clouds. They look “empty”.

First real bridge since a while now, which shows once more that the water is more present now.

Look, this is so green around now. Very different!

As I heared, there is two spots where we can enjoy hot springs. The “Termal Pool” and “Bitter Springs”. I’m not sure if both of them are free.

Before I’m going to the Thermal Pool, I want to have a look in town and go to the supermarket. I need a real, good, big, breakfast. This morning I ate 4 slices of bread with a Mars and water. I want orange juice! chocolate milk! Chocolate paste! I’m hungry!

Unfortunately, we are sunday and the supermarket was closed… I went to the roadhouse but paid the price. I’ve really enjoyed that nice, heavy breakfast :-) even if expensive. I will come back tomorrow to the supermarket to buy some more stuff and for a lower price I’m sure.

I haven’t been next to it so I don’t know if it’s a real termite nest or just a big sculpture.

As Australian like big things (The banana, the prawn, etc) it could be part of their collection. On the other way, I would not be surprised if that nest was a true representation of what termites are able to build.

On my way to the ternal pool!

I’m not there yet but the water looks really nice already.

Nearly there.

We must pass through a campsite to get to the Pool but it’s free. And there is toilets and showers along the way :-)

The pool, straight there.

Wow, very nice. I thought it would be more “natural” but lots of people are certainly coming here everyday and the high season just starts now.

Actually this is not too bad. There is maybe 10 to 15 people here and that’s all. Cooll, I will have a swim!

No one on this side. I’m going there :-)

I’ve spend more than an hour in that nice warm water. Most of the time I sat on the edge of the “falls” at the end of the pool. That way, I could relax, being suck buy the water but not enough to pass over the dam. That was nice!

There is a path to get to the river. Let’s have a look.

The path ;-)

Less than a minute later, the river :-)

This fisherman just missed a big fish! It was like 40cm long from where I am.

This stream is coming from the pool.

Hmmm, crocs here! Aaah Ah! Where are they?

Yes, this looks like a good place fo a crocodile :-)

Back at the Thermal Pool.

I’m out of the campsite, having lunch on the carpark when that dude came out from the bush, looking for food.

Obviously, it’s not his first contact with humans. He/She is looking everywhere and certainly too close to my dessert!

Video.

It just stays around, eating some nuts or fruits from the ground.

Just next to the carpark, there is a table and bench, just a nice spot to do some writing on my blog. Finally, after a big week, I’ve got internet :-)

I thought I could sit in that house (and even sleep there) but it’s a museum ;-)

Later on, another bird traced circles around me.

Nice colors!

And that’s it for today :-) I was on skype for some time until it was too dark to move somewhere else so I pitched my tent in that kind of park just next to the campsite. Houuu, bad behaviour! I could not sleep because there was a show at night. A guy was doing a performance with wips (I couldn’t see) and then there was a musician. Then it was, once more very hot, so it’s was hard to sleep. Few!

  1. Poor Damien, too hot to sleep…. It is cool at night in Cairns, I’ve always thought the center area (not anymore?) is cooler than Cairns at night.

  4. Hey Damien its hot over there in NZL its very cold but its my favourite season winter I can run like crazy aha! thanks for a nice photos!
