Luang Namtha, New Laos Year, day 7

Today is the last day of the new Laos Year. During the past week it is sure to get wet at least once per day. Few groups of children and teenagers wait for people and tourists to come around and splash! Fortunately, this is maybe the best thing that can happen with that super hot and dry weather :-) For this last day, I joined again the Chinese students. We went first to the food market and then had lunch and even dinner together. The next time I will see them, it will be in China.

I have been to this market everyday. There is everything here and it’s not too expensive. You can lower the price too but I’m not very good at it. I rely on the honesty of people which does not work all the time. There is veggies, rice, noodles, fish, meat, even dead BBQ rats and other bush animals on sticks! I did not dare to take the picture so I let you imagine.

Merchants can be pretty young here :-). The brown little things behind the eggs are actually worms :-\

That’s the noodles. I like those because there is no packaging around it but it’s not compact enough to carry this in my bag unfortunately. And I think it will be crutch in pieces after a day ride.

The Chinese students and teachers :-)

Funny the way they sell the salads here :-)

Outside there is even more fruit and veggies. In Laos, fruits are more expensive than veggies. For example, Bananas cost 10.000 Kip (1.6AUD) here. Well, I say expensive comoare to Thailand or other villages. Later in my trip, I will pay 4.000 Kip for the same banana bunch.

Ouch! I feel hot already!

Once the students picked up everything they needed we headed to the house where I’ve been previously. Five of them, live here. They cooked lunch and dinner for everyone. Chinese food :-)

The Chinese way is: you put everything in the middle of the table and everybody choose whatever he/she wants. That’s nice :-)

In two days, I will be back on the road and will cycle through the mountains of Northern Laos. I hope it won’t be as steep as my first day here. I will see. See ya!

  1. Les coutumes des repas sont les mêmes au Vietnam. Tout sur la table et chacun se débrouille ! Sympa le marché !

  2. It’s very interesting to see what they sell at the market.
Let me know the taste of the worms if you’ve had some.
