Victoria border > Orbost (114km, 6h16)

Today is a crazy day where I’ve done 114km and join Orbost which I did not expect. After spending almost a week in the countryside, a side of myself desired to come back next the ocean which pushed me beyond my limits. I’ve started at 750m high and knew I would ended at sea level which helped a lot to pass the 100km in a day. Let’s start the day.

Map.

The last night has been a bit cold. I think that’s because I was camping on a thick mattrees of grass which kept the humidity and the low temperature. It’s always around 6am (I guess) when I wake up and realize my feet and my nose are cold. brrr! After packing all my stuff I’m starting quietly the day. I start Victoria by the forest. Many people told me that Victoria is “Green” and here, straight away, it’s the case :-)

I’ve just ended up of a huge and looong downhill, the second longest downhill since Kuranda to Cairns. I’ve done 20km in an hour already. At that pace, I will be able to reach Orbost tonight!

I did not expect that here. I’ve stopped here for an hour. When I discover this place I was astonished. Some public toilets in a middle of nowhere with no one around. I could wash my hair, do the dishes, fill my bottles, do everything! In an hour, the temperature moved from freezing cold to warm which is good because I could barely move my fingers when I arrived here.

The woman from yesterday told me that there would be some gravel road at the beginning and then it would be sealed all the way. Apparently she was wrong because I’ve done some gravel yesterday and here they are again! Never trust the drivers! They don’t see things the same way as cyclists do :-)

I really enjoy this road even if it’s a bit bumpy sometimes. The trees and tall, the rivers is going along the road and I can hear it sometimes. It’s quiet, sunny and there is NO wind!

I’m still cycling in the forest and I enjoy because of all the downhills. It’s fast and I feel I’m going foward. The trees are changing a bit along the way and the traffic is still very light.

Rah! I’d love to see the ocean today but there is always some bloody hills to hide it!

One more downhill!

And one more top hill. Hmmm, I’m getting hungry :-)

The forest has burnt recently because I could see, and I can still see now some black trees like the top of this hill.

It’s now 3pm and I’ve done already 68km in 3 hours and 30 minutes! This spot will be perfect for having lunch.

So, there is a table, bench and the water is just down there, easy :-)

Yop!

I’m travelling and it doesn’t mean I’m eating rubbish every day. Today it’s maki but the “bush” version ;-) The ingrediants: Nori, rice mixed with my favourite “green powder”, mug beans sprouts, tuna, cheese and honey. And this is good!

Creative “bush” rolls ;-)

After another hour break, I’m on the road again and I’m determinate to cycle down the coast. I’ve got 46km more to reach my goal and I will do it!

Look how fast I was: This is it, the end of the forest is behind me :-)

It’s nice to see some open land.

Oh an OVNI or Saturn maybe :-)

I’m so happy because I done it! Orbost!

This is quiet… But I don’t care because I’ve done it!

Almost at the end of the town, I’ve discoved a park with toilets, tables, bins. The perfect spot to have dinner (and more of my trendy “bush” maki). Then I might be able to pith my tent somewhere. See you tomorrow for more adventure! Cheers!

  2. Wow, you made it! Now green rice after green noodle? Does it taste good?
I am making mung-beans, too. Mine takes only one day, how many days in cold Victoria?
